The Brief

Initial Problem & Challenge

Surf Life Saving Australia identified a critical need to reduce coastal fatalities among young men due to their increased risk-taking behaviours and overconfidence. The original approach, centred on broad media campaigns and general public safety interventions, had not effectively changed the dangerous behaviours of this target group.

As a result, Surf Life Saving Australia has decided to partner with Futures Studio to call for the development of a new approach to address the issue of coastal fatalities in young Australian males (15-39 years).

Our current understanding of the problem is that traditional safety messages are not effectively reaching young men who engage in coastal activities, partly due to their intrinsic overconfidence and tendency to seek thrills, which leads to a dismissive attitude towards potential dangers. Our design research indicates that an experiential and interactive approach is required to capture their attention and impart crucial safety knowledge, transforming their perception of risk through engaging and memorable learning experiences that resonate with their sense of adventure.

INSIGHT & FINDINGS BEYOND THE QUESTIONNAIRES

未命名的设计 (3)_edited.png

"I understand the importance of red and yellow flags on the beach, but sometimes the safety zone is too crowded."

- Interviewee 7

This statement reflects that young men seeking excitement and adventure, sometimes prioritize their personal recreational experiences over safety considerations.

"We usually go together as a group so we don't think about getting into any dangerous situations."

- Interviewee 5

This indicates a sense of security derived from being in a group, which may lead to underestimating potential risks due to collective overconfidence or reliance on others for safety cues.

- Interviewee 3

"I usually don't actively look for safety signs. After all, I go to the beach all the time and have never encountered any danger."

This comment suggests a complacency that can come from routine exposure without incidents, potentially leading to a dismissal of safety practices.

The Idea

1

Objective

The primary goal of the Tide Triumph Trials is to engage young men aged 19-39 in interactive and educative beach safety activities, leveraging their natural inclination towards high-risk challenges and group activities to foster essential safety practices.

2

Concept Detail

Tide Triumph Trials is an exhilarating, challenge-based interactive booth designed to simulate dangerous beach scenarios. This strategic and interaction design solution aims to teach beach safety in an engaging and memorable way, transforming essential safety knowledge into a thrilling competition.

3

Target Users

  • Young men aged 19-39 who are frequent beachgoers and enjoy competitive and group activities.

  • Spectators at the beach and viewers online who can learn from the broadcasts and potentially participate in future events.

2

How It Works?

  • Challenge Stations: Participants navigate a series of stations, each designed to simulate a specific beach hazard such as rip currents, or sudden wildlife encounters. These stations challenge both physical and mental agility while educating participants on how to react safely and effectively.

  • Live Commentary and Feedback: A dynamic host provides live commentary during the challenges, offering educational insights and safety tips tailored to each scenario. This information is also streamed on social media platforms and displayed on large screens at the beach to educate both participants and spectators.

  • Rewards and Recognition: Successful participants receive the "Warrior Badge," a symbol of their prowess and understanding of beach safety. Top performers may also be scouted for potential training and recruitment as Surf Life Saving volunteers, furthering their involvement in beach safety.

Reflection

How to effectively 'Engaging young men' has always been our primary concern and challenge, and it is also the most crucial part of our design. Through our field observations and research, we found that young men are a difficult group to persuade and educate, as they are often confident and impulsive. Therefore, we believe that instead of lecturing them, we should find ways to get them to actively participate and experience the process to achieve better results.
Consequently, in future designs, we should not only consider the needs of the target users but also analyze their behavior patterns and psychology.
