Interpretation of the brief

With the advancement of technology, future research in emerging designs has been significantly propelled. We aim to conduct our research based on Tin Sheds Gallery (TSG), encouraging people to explore the gallery's past, present, and future. Building upon the discussions from our previous assessment, we have chosen to focus on the theme of human rights equality. Using the Double Variable Method and STEEPLE analysis, we envision a future scenario where human rights gradually tend towards equality, and individuals collectively share in the community memory. In this envisioned scenario set in the year 2050, where societal traits include shared community memory and a strong emphasis on human rights equality, Tin Sheds Gallery (TSG) remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding equal human rights. TSG strives to foster a more inclusive and equitable social environment, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in and benefit from shared community memory experiences.

Solution

By 2050, TSG has transformed into a non-physical archive cloud. Sydney is adorned with holographic data spheres and cubes, providing an immersive historical experience for the entire city. The "archive cloud" not only allows the playback of historical events but also enables interaction and exploration of personal stories. To realize this vision, the present-day TSG is dedicated to collecting and supplementing missing archives, building and sharing community memory, and promoting human rights equality. Through user research and iteration, we have developed the final conceptual prototype, the "Sphere of Memories."

Idea

- App

Ideation

As an important platform in our design project, the App is linked with offline installation to achieve offline and online support for users. Our design concept of this app has two main points: 1. Consider with usability and accessibility, for people who cannot visit the installation or don’t have time to stop and experience it, the app may be a better choice. They can visit the archives and interact with others anytime and anywhere. 2. Increase interaction: In order to increase interaction methods and different experiences for users, they can experience a completely different interactive experience in the app than offline.

Interactions

Community

This is a relatively open and free area where users can publish any content related to TSG, archives or history. Here users can see all kinds of interesting information shared by people, and users can comment, like and share.

Daily recommendation

The system will automatically recommend the most popular archives every day on the homepage.

Uploading new archive

It is as important as visiting historical archives. If the user has new discoveries and wants to spread it, they can upload them to the app to create a new archive for people.

Message reminder

When a new archive is uploaded, the user's mobile device will receive a new message prompt which showing simple information about the new archive, and click to view the details.

Link with TSG

Displaying historical archives is still the most important and main function which we pay more attention to on the app, and all content related to archives is displayed on the homepage. We have set up two archive searchers. The first one is classified by category, such as women's rights, LBGT groups, aboriginal people, etc. At the same time, user can also select archives corresponding to the year through the timeline.

Reflection

This project holds special significance for me as a student of the design faculty. We all have a responsibility to help Tin Sheds Gallery regain its prominence within the campus, society, and public consciousness. Tin Sheds Gallery has a rich history and is deeply intertwined with historical, social, political, and power dynamics. The biggest challenge of this project is gathering archival materials from the past to the present and presenting them in a comprehensive and objective manner. Despite the difficulties in sourcing historical data, our team is filled with enthusiasm.
Through this project, I have realized that as designers, we need not only rational and calm thinking and judgment but also to imbue our work with our emotions, passion, and reflections to resonate with the public.
